Peter Bland

Peter Bland entered the world on May 12, 1934, in Scarborough, Yorkshire, as Peter Gordon Bland. At the age of twenty, he crossed the globe to New Zealand, where he would eventually graduate from Victoria University of Wellington. His early career saw him behind the microphone as a radio producer for the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation.

In the literary sphere, Bland became a vital presence within the Wellington Group, a circle of poets that included luminaries like James K. Baxter and Louis Johnson. His creative drive, however, extended beyond the page and into the world of performance. He was a co-founder and the artistic director of the Downstage Theatre, guiding its vision from 1964 to 1968.

After a brief return to Britain in 1970, Bland eventually settled permanently in Auckland, New Zealand. His legacy is a rich tapestry of poetry and theatre, marked by a distinctive voice that has earned him recognition as a significant figure in New Zealand's cultural landscape.
