The Inland Sea (1991)

In 1971, Donald Richie, an author and film scholar, chronicled his journey through Japan’s Inland Sea, blending reflections on traditional culture with personal insights. Two decades later, filmmaker Lucille Carra embarked on a similar adventure, inspired by Richie’s influential book. Her film captures stunning visuals and encounters with locals who uphold vanishing traditions. Along the way, Carra includes unexpected stops, such as a monk fond of Frank Sinatra and a leper colony, all narrated by Richie and accompanied by a score from renowned composer Toru Takemitsu. This exploration offers a profound commentary on the experience of being an outsider.
